ABOUT THE PLACE

Ancient City of Klazomenai

As you approach Urla’s İskele area, more than a beautiful sea view awaits: a major cultural heritage that rewrites the story of industry and trade in Anatolia. One of the twelve great Ionian cities, ancient Klazomenai is no ordinary ruin left in dusty history books, but a fascinating open-air museum carrying ancient ingenuity, productive power and overseas ambition into the present.

The Starting Point of Olive Oil in Anatolia

Klazomenai’s foremost discovery, rarely matched elsewhere, is undoubtedly its sixth-century BC Olive Oil Workshop. More than an old production site, it was a centre of advanced “industrial” technology where olives were crushed, separated using hot water and stored. Faithfully reconstructed today, the workshop presents the deep roots of olive oil in Anatolian culture vividly to visitors.

A Trading Network Across Continents

The ancient city was ahead of its time in trade as well as production. Its valuable olive oil was filled into distinctive banded amphorae—earthenware jars—and exported across a vast area from the Black Sea coast to southern France. As you explore the open-air museum, you can see replicas of these amphorae and imagine the busy lives of sailors and merchants on these waters.

Internet infrastructure can be inadequate at ancient sites spread over large areas. If you are telling guests the story of this millennia-old trade and production, designing a system that streams audio directly to their own smartphones through local Wi-Fi and a mini server, without needing an internet connection, can eliminate the interruptions and crackling of traditional headsets and make your narration more effective.

What to See at Klazomenai

Slow your pace as you explore the historic setting and include these important stops:

✓ Ancient Olive Oil Workshop: Examine the ancient model of factory production through its wooden press mechanisms and storage pits.

✓ Klazomenai Amphorae: See the distinctively designed clay vessels that became popular packaging in the ancient world and a symbol of maritime trade.

✓ Remains of the Ancient Harbour and Quay: When the water is low or clear, look for traces of the old harbour, the heart of the city’s commercial power.
